Post Surgical Instructions for Implant and Periodontal Procedures
These instructions apply to the surgical procedure just completed. They are designed to instruct you in procedures that will minimize post-surgical discomfort and inform you of situations that may possibly require special attention.
Discomfort
It is not unusual to have a certain amount of discomfort for a day or two following your surgical procedure. You will be given a prescription for medication to insure you of a mild post-surgical recovery period. Please use this medication as directed.
Swelling
Swelling may follow surgical procedure. To prevent/minimize swelling, it is advisable to place an ice pack over the area, 10 minutes on and 10 minutes off, for the next 2-3 hours. Remember the utilization of a cold compress to reduced swelling is only effective if used immediately after the surgical procedure. If, after the first 24 hours, swelling has occurred, apply heat to the involved area in the form of wet or dry compresses as often as is convenient.
Bleeding
A small amount of bleeding is all that is necessary to discolor your saliva. DO NOT be alarmed as this is normal. If excessive or continuous bleeding occurs:
If bleeding continues, please do not hesitate to call this office.
Activities
Get at least your usual requirement of rest and sleep. Within the first 48 hours, use an extra pillow to keep your head elevated when you lie down. You may follow your regular daily routine, avoiding excessive exertion of any type. Golf, swimming, sunbathing, or any activity which lowers your head, should be postponed for 48 hours.
Diet
Do not eat on the side that was operated upon for a period of eight hours. Avoid hot foods and liquids for two hours. A liquid diet may be used at first but remember, adequate nutrition is essential for healing. Diets rich in quality protein, ascorbic acid and Vitamin B complex are especially desirable. Foods such as liver, meat, eggs, milk and citrus fruits, as well as whole grain or enriched cereals are recommended.
Rinsing
Do not rinse for 24 hours post-surgery. After 24 hours, you may rinse gently with warm salt water after meals to remove debris. If it has been prescribed, please begin rinsing with Peridex (prescribed mouth rinse) 72 hours after surgical procedure. Allow the solution to run over affected areas for 15 seconds WITHOUT SWISHING and then expel remainder three times daily. This will help keep the surgical site clean.
Special Medications
Antibiotics may be prescribed following your surgical procedure. It is to your advantage to take all the prescribed medications (antibiotics, discomfort medications) as close to the advised time schedule as is possible. It is usually advisable not to take medications on an empty stomach as nausea may result.
