Professional Teeth Whitening Can Produce Dramatic Results
Dr. William Papadopoulos offers both in-office and at-home teeth whitening treatments at his Brookline, MA practice to help make patients’ smiles shine as brightly as possible. Professional in-office teeth whitening treatments can provide instant results, whitening your smile by as many as eight shades in a single visit. Professional at-home treatments can offer similar results in just two weeks. There are countless over-the-counter teeth whitening options available, but professional treatment is the safest and most effective way to achieve your whitest smile.
What Makes Professional Teeth Whitening Different
Professional teeth whitening is supervised by your dentist, so there is no risk of over-whitening your teeth or of causing any damage. Professional whitening systems such as Zoom!® use a higher concentration of peroxide than that of over-the-counter methods to dramatically whiten your smile in a single office visit. At-home teeth whitening systems provided by your dentist, such as Sheer White!®, are another safe way to dramatically whiten your smile from the comfort of your own home and at your convenience.
What makes professional teeth whitening different from off-the-shelf teeth whitening? Professional in-office teeth whitening treatments can provide safe and instant results in a single visit.
Over-the-counter teeth whitening can over whiten teeth, not whiten enough and even cause damage to teeth. Professionally performed teeth whitening can brighten your smile by up to 8 shades in a single visit which you can follow up with an at-home maintenance product to keep your teeth glowing. Professionally applied teeth whitening:
- Begins with deep cleaning to remove particles and bacteria that may interfere with the whitening process
- Applies a guard to avoid gum whitening
- Applies a high concentration of peroxide gel for 15-minute intervals
Am I a Candidate for Teeth Whitening?
Adults and teens—with parent permission—may be candidates for professional teeth whitening. Professional in-office and at-home whitening systems can be used to treat mild to moderate extrinsic stains. Although there are various formulas available, patients with extremely sensitive teeth may not be suitable candidates for teeth whitening. Both our in-office and at-home methods may be a good treatment option for patients with temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders because these systems do not utilize whitening trays. Professional teeth whitening is ineffective on restorative materials such as porcelain. Patients with intrinsic stains may be better candidates for porcelain veneers or dental bonding.
What to Expect
During your consultation, your dentist will thoroughly examine your teeth and gums to ensure there are no other health concerns that need to be addressed. Together you will discuss your treatment goals, and your dentist will perform a shade analysis of your teeth to determine the ideal shade for your smile and show you your likely results.
If you opt for the Zoom!® treatment, we will first clean your teeth to remove particles and bacteria that might interfere with the whitening agent. A barrier will be placed over your gums to prevent contact with the whitening gel, which can cause irritation. Then we will apply the gel to the enamel in 15 minute intervals to dramatically whiten your smile in just one hour. Most patients will require maintenance treatments to preserve their whiter smile.
If you choose the at-home Sheer White!® method, you will be given your whitening strips along with specific instructions for how long to wear them. Most patients will wear the whitening strips for one to two hours each day until they achieve their desired results.
Benefits of Professional Teeth Whitening
Professional teeth whitening is a safe and non-invasive way to improve the overall appearance of your smile. In-office teeth whitening offers immediate results, and at-home methods allow you to whiten your smile at your convenience. Both systems will give you a whiter, more radiant smile that can improve your self-confidence.

I had a hard time trusting dentists in general since my last visit to one. Dr. P. really made me change that. The dental hygienist and dental assistant are great, very gentle and caring. Not to mention their state-of-the-art equipment and cleanliness. I would definitely recommend everyone to give them a try.- A DexKnows Reviewer
