iTero Align Oral Health Suite: A Deep Dive into Tooth Health
A Message from Dr. Bill
In our last newsletter, we introduced you to our iTero 3D intraoral scanner and the 5 pillars of Oral Longevity. Today, we are opening the vault on Pillar #1: Tooth Health.
When we think about keeping our teeth healthy, we often think about brushing, flossing, and regular dental cleanings. Yes, these are essential, but maintaining healthy teeth for a lifetime requires us to look beyond what we can see in the mirror. Many dental problems develop gradually. Small changes in tooth shape, enamel thickness, bite patterns, gum position, or tooth movement may occur long before a patient experiences pain or notices a visible difference.
At Beacon Place Dental Group, the goal isn’t simply to treat problems when they appear. It’s to identify changes early enough that we can protect your natural teeth whenever possible.
Understanding Tooth Wear: The Unseen Battle Under Pressure
Tooth enamel is the hardest substance in the human body, but it faces constant physical and chemical challenges everyday.
Everytime you chew, bite, clench, or grind - your teeth experience forces. At the same time, acidic foods, beverages, and other sources of acid exposure can gradually contribute to enamel erosion. As time goes on, these repeated stresses can change the shape and strength of your teeth. Because enamel does not regenerate once it has been permanently lost, recognizing excessive wear early is an important part of long-term dental health.
As enamel begins to wear away, you may start to notice several changes:
- Sensitivity Can Develop: As enamel becomes thinner, the underlying dentin can become more exposed, potentially causing sensitivity to cold, heat, sweets or acidic foods.
- Teeth Can Become More Vulnerable: Significant enamel loss can make teeth more vulnerable to chips, cracks, and other structural problems.
- Your Bite Can Change: When chewing surfaces gradually flatten or your teeth shift, the way your upper and lower teeth come together can change.
- Your Smile Can Look Different: Changes in tooth shape, length, texture, and color can become more noticeable as wear progresses.
- Existing Dental Work Can Be Affected: Changes in bite forces and tooth structure can place additional stress on fillings, crowns, veneers, and other restorations.
The important part is that tooth wear is often a gradual process. The earlier we recognize a pattern, the more oppurtunities we may have to protect your teeth.
Taking A Closer Look into Tooth Health
One of the most exciting aspects of our digital approach at Beacon Place Dental Group is the ability to create a high-end resolution 3D model of your teeth and gums using the iTero scanner. We are able to capture your dental anatomy digitally and view your smile from every angle. This allows us to have a baseline of your teeth, which becomes especially powerful when we compare it with future scans.
Seeing Your Teeth in Realistic Color
Because the 3D model displays your teeth in natural looking colors it makes it easier for patients to understand and find familiarity with the digital model. Rather than looking at a flat image of diagram, you can rotate and view your teeth from different angles. This realistic color view can help us examine and discuss tooth shape, surface characteristics, restorations and other visible features.
For our patients at Beacon Place Dental Group, this can make dental conversations much more meaningful. Instead of simply hearing that your dentist is monitoring an area of wear or change in tooth structure, you can see the area on our own digital model. Realistic color visualization helps bridge the gap between what your dentist sees clinically and what you can understand as a patient!
It can be easier to:
- See the actual shape and contours of your teeth
- Recogize differences between natural tooth structure and restorations
- Understand areas your dentist wants to monitor
- Discuss changes in your teeth in a more visual and interactive way
- Better understanding of your overal health
The goal here at Beacon Place Dental Group isn’t just to make an impressive 3D model image. It is to make your dental health easier to see, understand and discuss.
Switching to Monochrome: A Different Way to See Your Teeth
While realistic color provides a familiar representation of your teeth, the monochrome view can provide a different visual perspective. By removing the distraction of natural tooth colors, certain changes in tooth shape and surface contour can become easier to visualize. By using both views, our team can look at your teeth from different visual perspectives and use the one that best helps explain what we are seeing.
What We Can Monitor:
- Tooth Position: Small movements or changes in alignment can become easier to recognize when your current scan is compared with an earlier scan.
- Tooth Shape and Surface Changes: Changes in the contours of chewing surfaces can provide valuable information when we are monitoring tooth wear.
- Restorations and Cosmetic Dentistry: Digital records can help us monitor the relationship between your natural teeth and existing restorations, including veneers, crowns and other dental work.
- Orthodontic Changes: For patients who have undergone Invisalign or other orthodontic treatment, digital scans can help visualize tooth movement and long-term stability.
Why Monitoring Over Time Matters
Think of it this way: a single dental scan gives us a snapshot, but multiple scans gives us a story. When we establish a digital baseline and continue scanning over time, we can compare your teeth with their previous condition.
As we mentioned earlier, the goal is not to wait until a tooth becomes painful or significantly damaged. The goal is to understand your teeth early, monitor changes, and make informed decisions about protecting your smile!
